Get Around Hong Kong is meant to work for everyone, including wheelchair users, people with prams or heavy luggage, and people who are blind, have low vision, or are deaf or hard of hearing. This page explains what the planner does for you, how the site itself is built, and where its information stops.
Step-free trips
Turn on Step-free in Settings and routes avoid stairs, green minibuses and trams (which have steps at the door). At MTR stations the planner names only the exits MTR lists as step-free, and says how: by lift, by ramp or at street level. Franchised buses are low-floor.
Each MTR station in a trip has an Accessibility line listing what MTR provides there: lifts, accessible toilets, wide gates, tactile guide paths, tactile maps, Braille and induction loops. It opens by itself if you've set Step-free, or a person with a disability among the travellers, who also get the disability concession fare.
Using the site
Every trip is written out in full as text, so the map is never needed: screen readers can follow each walk and ride, and the number of routes found is announced. The site works with a keyboard, with text enlarged to 200%, in light or dark themes, and follows your device's reduce-motion setting. It's available in English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA. The site is checked with an automated accessibility tester and by hand; if something doesn't work for you, please tell us.
What we can't tell you
Lifts and escalators are sometimes out of service, and there's no public live feed of their status, so a step-free route can be interrupted. Station staff can help, and arrange a portable ramp or the accessible-car service where MTR offers them. Step-free information comes from MTR's own list on DATA.GOV.HK; walking paths come from OpenStreetMap and can miss a kerb or a temporary closure. Light Rail stops and ferry piers aren't covered in the same detail.
Tell us
If a route sent you somewhere you couldn't get through, an exit was wrong, or part of the site doesn't work with your device or assistive technology, email hello@getaroundhongkong.com. We read every message and fix what we can.
