Get Around Hong Kong is a free journey planner. You don't need an account, and we don't ask for your name, email or phone number. This page explains what information the site handles when you use it, and why.

Trips and searches

When you search for a place or plan a trip, your browser sends what you typed, the places' coordinates and the departure time to our server, which works out the routes. These are used to answer the request and are not stored with anything that identifies you.

To find addresses and live arrival times, our server asks public services on your behalf: the Hong Kong Government's Address Lookup Service (with the text you typed) and the transport operators' live arrival feeds (with the stop and route only).

Your location

Your device's location is used only if you allow it in your browser, for example by tapping "Use my location". It is sent to our server as coordinates to plan your trip, find nearby places and rank nearby branches of a chain, and is not stored. You can turn location access off in your browser settings at any time.

Shared links

When you tap Share, a summary of that trip is saved on our server so the short link works: the start and end places and their names, the times, the fare shown, the rides and the route's shape, your language and your light or dark setting. It contains no information about you, but anyone with the link can see it. Links that nobody opens for 90 days are deleted automatically.

Saved on your device

Your choices are remembered in your own browser, not on our server: your language (in a cookie kept for one year), and your theme, travellers, step-free and currency settings (in browser storage). Google Analytics also sets its own cookies (see below). Clearing your browser data removes them all.

Other services the page loads

The map is loaded from OpenFreeMap, so your browser connects to their servers, which see your IP address as for any website. Exchange rates come from ExchangeRate-API and are fetched by our server, not your browser.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics, a service from Google, to understand how the site is used: which pages are visited, roughly where visitors are (country or city), what kind of device and browser they use, and how they found the site. This helps us improve it. Google Analytics uses cookies, and the information is processed by Google, including outside Hong Kong. It doesn't give us your name or contact details, and we don't try to identify you from it.

Where the law requires it, we ask for your consent before these cookies are set. You can also block them in your browser, or install Google's opt-out add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout). How Google uses this information is explained at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Where your information is processed

The site runs on servers we rent from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure in Singapore. Your trip and place searches, shared links and server logs are processed and stored there, outside Hong Kong. Oracle provides the servers only and does not use this information for its own purposes. Services mentioned on this page, such as OpenFreeMap and Google Analytics, may process information in other countries.

Server logs

Like any website, our server can record technical details such as IP addresses and the pages requested when something goes wrong. These logs are used only to keep the site running and secure, and are deleted after 30 days.

What we don't do

We don't sell or rent information, don't show advertising based on you, and don't use Google Analytics data for advertising. If what we do changes, we'll update this page before it does.

Your rights and contact

You can ask what information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, for example a shared link you created. Write to us at hello@getaroundhongkong.com. The site is run from Hong Kong, and we follow the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.
